This is where I’m supposed to tell you that I am a registered dietitian, that I have a masters in public health, and that I am a certified diabetes educator. Perhaps you might like to know that I am also a wife, and mother to a bonus daughter, a sister, a daughter and a friend. I could also relate to you by sharing my story as a Black woman, a first-generation settler of two parents who immigrated from Jamaica or my story of coming into a co-caregiving role very early in my life when my Father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in his 40s. Of about how a combination of these circumstances gave me the experience of what it was like to live in a low-income household after my parents lost their jobs. Every one of these experiences is relevant to my story and are ingredients that allude to the recipe of my life but, they are not who I
am.
It’s taken some time to recognize and I now know myself as someone who is sparked to make meaning, connections, relationships and joy from my experiences.
Since food, teaching and health are some of my most creative and valuable outlets, I use them to express and share some of the more important nutrition and life lessons I’ve learned to help individuals and communities heal.
